The Duck Gods Must Be Crazy: More Stories of Waterfowling Obsession

Doug Larsen (Author)

In this follow up to his best-selling book Don't Shoot the Decoys, Doug Larsen offers more humorous observations on the sport of waterfowling. The book begins with a hilarious "Open Letter to the Duck Gods," in which Larsen ponders what he has done to deserve the wrath of the duck hunting deities, which have conspired against him to ruin his hunting season, his physical and mental health, and his family life. "Three weeks into the season," he writes, "with only two weeks left to go. Everything seems to be going against me, and I wouldn't know a limit of ducks if I tripped over one."

From there Larsen lets his duck hunting fancy take flights that are sure to tickle the funny bones of waterfowlers everywhere. These include ruminations on why there aren't any duck hunting movies (in the story "Black Duck Down"), a duck hunt with two sharp-shooting and keen-witted little old ladies in the Louisiana bayou (in "A Duck for Gumbo"), a chapter devoted to, of all things, "Coot Tactics," and seventeen other new and original stories of "waterfowling obsession."

The Complete Guide to Hunting Wild Boar in California

Gary Kramer (Author)

Hogs are now the most popular big-game animal in the Golden State, even surpassing deer in popularity among hunters. In this comprehensive and detailed book, Gary Kramer takes the hunter all over California, from north to south and east to west. He discusses natural history, calibers, bullets, rifles, pistols, shotguns, black powder, and bow and arrows. Other chapters discuss equipment, the six major systems of hunting hogs, the top hog-producing counties, and hunting areas--those with public access as well as private hog-hunting ranches and military bases that allow hunting. Surprisingly, there are quite a few areas in California that afford public access for hog hunters. The book is chock-a-block full with details, addresses, telephone numbers, Web sites, and relevant information that will help you bring the bacon home. Hints on photography, caring for the meat, as well as a good, thorough list of meat processors are also included to help with converting your hog into good memories and delightful dishes. And just when you thought Kramer would have nothing else to add, he divulges delicious recipes to appease your spouse and present her with a decent excuse as to why you went hunting! This is THE hogging best book on how to get your pig.

Counting Sheep: Twenty Ways of Seeing Desert Bighorn (The Southwest Center)

Gary Paul Nabhan (Author)

While variations on so specific a theme runs the risk of putting readers to sleep, counting sheep with these authors will keep you wide awake. Ethnobotanist Nabhan here presents the diverse views of zoologists, anthropologists, historians, geographers, hunters, and journalists regarding desert bighorn. As the subtitle suggests, this book is as much about how the bighorns roam the hearts and minds of the watchers as it is about the elusive sheep themselves. Most of the authors take a very personal approach to "doing science," with Terry Tempest Williams, Ann Zwinger, and Charles Bowden offering particularly powerful narratives. While some readers new to "the new nature writing" may wish to start with a more general anthology such as On Nature's Terms, Counting Sheep is essential reading for naturalists and conservationists. Highly recommended for both public and academic libraries.

Jungle Man: An Autobiography of Major P.J. Pretorius (Resnick's Library of African Adventure)

P. J. Pretorius (Author)

“Having read a vast number of books on Africa and African hunters, I was looking forward to getting my copy of Jungle Man. I was under the impression that it might be a good story but told in a stilted, "stiff upper lip" kind of style. Not so! Pretorious tells his life story in a thoroghly interesting and absorbing way. There is no exaggeration in his writing, yet he manages to convey quite well the experiences of his life time. The photos are pretty ordinary (as per usual for books from that era) and there is no index. But these are minor points. You will fully enjoy reading about his adventures in Old Africa from the age he left home to manage ox wagons to his involvement in some early African films. Well worth reading.”

Hunting Open-Country Mule Deer

Dwight Schuh (Author)

I am an avid mule deer hunter and an even more avid reader. I have easily read more than fifty books and guides on hunting both mule and whitetail deer. Dwight Schuh has written what I believe to be the "handbook of all hanndbooks" on hunting mule deer that everyone should own! Many hunting books are vague and tell only of the great hunts and trophies that the author or his associates have harvested. Dwight Schuh's book is the complete opposite. His book is written as if you are sitting together by a camp fire and talking about what he believes are the essentials to hunting the mule deer. He includes errors he made as well as the tactics that work.

It is a "real" hunting book with invaluable information. So many of the examples I would read and say to myself, "Yep, I've definately experienced that!" At this stage in my hunting and reading career, I didn't think I would ever find a book that could teach me so much and be so easy to understand. I have read through it several times and it now looks like a reference book with all the highlighted areas and writing in the margins. I would like nothing more than to be able to communicate with Dwight Schuh on a professional hunting level; if not only to gain more insight into the mule deer and it's behavior than to build an even deeper respect for a tophy animal that gives me life!

Wild Turkeys: Hunting and Watching

John J. Mettler (Author)

Wild turkeys are mentioned often in early American history. Benjamin Franklin even championed the wild turkey rather than the bald eagle for recognition as our national bird. Although the wild turkey was once nearly extinct in North America, it has seen a dramatic population increase within the past two decades. There are now 4.5 million nationwide as a result of stocking and restoration efforts. Mettler's book is a complete guide to understanding, hunting, dressing, and cooking these noble birds. The author covers habits, including feeding patterns, mating rituals, and distribution. Recommendations on weapons and equipment, clothing, and safety measures to aid in a successful hunt are also provided. The field-dressing process and proper handling of the turkey carcass are covered, as are step-by-step mounting instructions. Thirty recipes and sources for further information are provided. The Wilderness of the Southwest: Charles Sheldon's Quest for Desert Bighorn Sheep and Adventures with the Havasupai and Seri Indians

In His StepsNeil B. Carmony (Author), David E. Brown (Editor)

Charles Sheldon (1867-1928) was a hunter-conservationist whose efforts substantially enriched the American public domain. A Yale graduate, Sheldon explored North America from the Arctic to the high Sierra Madre of Mexico. Sent to central Alaska in 1903 as an assessor by C. Hart Merriam, the director of the U.S. Biological Survey, Sheldon began to press for the creation of a national park to protect 20,322-foot Denali, a mountain sacred to local Indian cultures. Sheldon finally prevailed in 1919 (although, against his protests, the mountain was renamed McKinley). Soon thereafter Merriam dispatched him to the Southwest, where he hunted and studied pronghorn antelope and desert bighorn and explored the harsh Pinacate and Lechuguilla regions of western Arizona and Sonora. This collection of his essays well recounts his many travels and observations on animal behavior, and it serves as a fine introduction to the life of a little-known but important early environmentalist.
